Postcarding 101: the pen is mightier than yelling at your TV

Updated: 7 hours ago

Can’t canvass? Phone phobic? Want a new tool for your activism kit?

Think postcards: a fun and effective way to inform and motivate low-information or low-propensity voters across the country. Do it alone while you watch the news (gah…), or join one of the postcard parties popping up all over. Postcard resisters meet in cafes and living rooms, around tables full of snacks and a rainbow array of pens and stickers. Search for postcarding events near you at Mobilize, or organize one with friends.

Check out these main groups:

Blue Wave Postcard Movement [sign up for updates]

Vote Forward (this great group writes letters to voters)

There are lots of other groups and many candidates and issue-oriented organizations offer postcarding options. Each group has its own process, guidelines, and opportunities. All provide you with voters' addresses and a script. Some let you use your own postcards; others have pre-printed cards for sale. Nearly all require you to buy postcard stamps.

Unless a group requires a specific postcard, you can buy postcards designed to send to voters, or use appropriate postcards you already have.

Tips

  • Share photos of your cards on social media to inspire others, but always cover the voter's name & address

  • Stick to the provided script or talking points

  • Etsy is a good place to buy postcards to voters

  • If your local post office doesn't have postcard stamps, order online for a small delivery fee. Current postcard stamps cost .56 each

  • Have fun!
